At any rate, when I get my skills up, I'll go party with abyone that's interested, and we can head over to the orc cave and kill everything we think we might have a chance at. *smile* Lightchild |

20: [Aug 21 1998] An apology (Hippo)
For those who read the log of Raven's death on his web site, I want to appologize for the way I carried on after his death. My behavior was unaccetable. In character, I certainly was feeling the things I said about Raven, sincemy home had just been invaded, but ooc I meant Raven no ill will. He and his band certainly made this place a lot more exciting for at least a night. If it hadn't been for a bit of serendipity, he would probably he holding our castle right now. I just wanted to make a public apology for the things I said about Raven, and make it known I have also apologized to him personally. In his (not so grand this time) smallness, He who plays Hippo
21: [Aug 21 1998] Re: An apology (Raven)

25: [Nov 20 1998] Changes (Alsatia)
What I've noticed when I got back here was the huge attitudes, errr..more of it actually, the "I'm big and tough so shut the hell up" attitude is just not my cup of cocoa. That attitude has even sucked me in at moments. Personally, I hate it. And to deal with that, plus the changes the creators have made, is almost too much to handle. I can deal with the creator changes, but the atmosphere is filled with too much plastic faces, if you know what I mean. Almost enough to chase me out of here too/again. I too miss the way it was when I first started. There was your group of helpers, etc, etc, and there was your group of punks. Now days, almost everyone's a punk. Too much people jumping on the same bandwagon. Heh, that's just my point of view. Pepe (I'll refer to you as Pepe cause I knew him more), I hope you decide to change your mind on leaving cause you and just a handful of people are pretty much the only reason why I've come back to play as often as I have been lately. K, I can go on, but I got stuff to do, soooooo yah. -Al
26: [Dec 4 1998] re: changes (Toadie)
Just my 2 cents...I'm not quite as old and decrepit as Al (heh), but I too find the atmosphere these days roughly intolerable around here. Perhaps this is just the tendency of all people to over-glamorize the good 'ol days, but it seems pretty clear that nobody really has fun here any more, or at least not consistently. There's a lot more terror informing play these days than when I cut my teeth; I suppose there could be any number of structural reasons for that, and I'm certainly not creative enough to suggest any code changes to alleviate what I see as the problems here. All I can say is that the game seems to have lost its soul; with it, I suspect, will go a lot of the senior players. later toadie the walked five miles to school uphill both ways in his day
27: [Dec 8 1998] Today and the Past (Shad)
May of you don't know me as I tend to appear and disappear for short periods of time, but I was discussing this today and realised that I am one of the oldest player on this mud (started in 1991) only Raven and Tellborn are older, I think (maybe a few others). Things have changed a lot. Sadly a lot of Eristan has not changed, it basically the same place. Most people spend most of there time in Eristan, so its sad that it hasn't changed much. The reason people do that is the main thing that always has made Dartmud a good mud, because its RP. Its not go see who can go kill the most or get the most money, its social. Sadly over the years that element of RP has gone to extremes, either people play total RP or ignore it. So many can't handle the difference between what they know and what their character "should" know. There is this whole reincarnation thing, which is ok, but when we allow people to use second character and out of game knowledge we have problems. These are not bad in themselves, but some people can not honestly handle them. Knowing how to solve a quest is one thing, but "leaving the door unlocked" in one character for the other, or sharing information gained by the other character is not. Use knowledge gained as a player, but don't use one character to support the other. The second thing I have noticed over the years is the involvement of creators. Creators have always been involved in how the mud runs, but now it has changed. They used to materialized in the public square and make everything public, now it i done behind closed doors and rumor abounds. Creators used to let players go around and kill each other, now they want to step in. Who remembers the ogre wars (pre-history) or the vampire hunts (modern)? Slowly over time the skills have been twiddled down and made harder to both learn and to make use of. I think this was done to create a more level playing field. The problem is the old players will still learning so much far then new ones. They only people it hurts is the newbies. Make it easier on newbies. Let them become and feel part of the game. Let there be really powerful players, there has to be a goal. They provided the nobility and staybility of the mud. People that were extraordinary and could handle extraordinary events now only require ordinary events to kill. Its amazing when one looks at the history of Dartmud that these "immortal" characters are dealt with naturally. They either stoping playing much or get killed somehow (usaly exotically). There is no need to remove such player by coding. It would be wonderful if we once again had creators that would come down and interact with players again. We are here because we enjoy this mud and most of use wish to improve it. I like creators trying things out and discussing with players what they think. Excluding the ancient coders one I member most was Brandon. He was so interactive and pushing for new things, it was wonderful. Sadly he couldn't keep himself from cheating, and gotten removed. We need more stuff like that. Just my 2 cents, Shad

33: [Feb 22 1999] re: fuzzy on multiple chars (Honor)
Could someone clarify as to how multiplaying is detrimental to the fun-factor for other players? I can see if a player were amassing a (an) army of anomitons (sp?), but if each character was being played as an individual with it's own mind (and goals) ..in effect roleplaying.. how does this ruin the game for other players? Just curious...
34: [Feb 23 1999] Re: Fuzzy (Raven)
It's kind of like a speed limit. You might be able to drive 140 mph safely on an interstate highway, but if everybody was allowed to, you'd get people who can't handle it. Likewise, YOU might be able to play your mage and your fighter at the same time and never pass a thought or piece of knowledge from one to the other, but not everyone can. Let's say I'm running two chars, a mage and a fighter. The fighter is at Pelidor whacking away at him. The mage is at the golem casting lg. An enemy of the fighter walks up to the Golem and says, "Hey, has anybody seen (your fighter char)? I'm gonna kill him! He looked sideways at my sister!" Now, you might not suddenly switch to your fighter's window and take appropriate measures, but how many people (playing from an ISP with a triangular icon which shall remain nameless, for example) could or would maintain that separation? I can't believe I really had to explain that.

It may be missing a few people , but remember we want mages or fighters who you feel lead their field at some point. Due to requests, I've added in an "other" category for those who've had a great influence on the game but are not pigeonholed as a fighter or a mage. Mages Lirrin - Bor - D Getti D Troy - Blackthorn - Grendel D Quest - Phaedra - D Gered * - Kythalus (the Elder) * D Ivy * Tal - Kythalus (the Younger) * Fighters RedhandD OcelotD Mithral War * Kye * D Square * Kimar * Id Amph D Myth Nimbus Other Skitz D Reva D Frederic Daiwyn Rubius - D * former HoW member - Healer's Guild member D Dead Anyone we missed, or who shouldn't be on there? |

AGAAWEL has the whole arrogant mistique in-joke (well, reference anyway) thing going for it, that DARTMUD doesn't. That way, only real dartmuddites know you're a geek. Everyone else thinks "What's with that license plate"? Katkt |
70: [Jan 10 2000] My vanity plates. (Ramik)
Sarderic, you're a creator. You spend your spare time adding-on to an imaginary fantasy world. I don't think your license plates are the deciding factor in whether or not you're a geek. Katkt: Yeah, I considered AGAAWEL too, but I sort of wanted to be a rolling ad for DM, and I figured AGAAWEL would be too obscure a reference. What I haven't mentioned is my (yet-to-be-ordered) "www.dartmud.com" license plate frame. I haven't decided what the full text should be, but I figure the web address should appear in there somewhere. The are I live is techie enough that I ought to be able to snag a few folks who know what a mud is. Hopefully, I'll attract some worthwhile new players. Mostly, though, this was my alternative to the long-since abandoned idea of DM t-shirts. (Yeah, like THOSE wouldn't have been geeky.) ;-) ---Ramik |

74: [Jan 12 2000] re: Adarkts (Eddard)
And what would happen if you had to start a new character? "Eddard the orc" will now be written on any name tags I wear PS- Ramik, I sure hope those players you attract aren't anything like the last batch of buggers!

77: [Jan 14 2000] Re: Thunder... (Bralvokia)
Hm. - 1 respect point for using a name you knew was already taken, - 1 for the name being that of a cartoon character, - 1 for being a catfolk with the reference to something about cats in it (if people chose their own names IRL, would you call yourself Humano?), - 1 for posting about it. player of Bralvokia
78: [Jan 16 2000] respect (Jedra)
Hmmm...I'd have to give you -10 or -20 repspect points for putting Panthro down Bral. No one likes a bully. Were you one of those kids at luch who would pick on the skinniest geekiest looking kid, or worse yet one of the slower kids or even one of those mildly mentally retarded, just to get a laugh? Or to keep the other bullys from pikcing on you? I hope you not really like this in real life. If you were, I'd have to give you -100 respect and tell you to grow up.
79: [Jan 16 2000] Re: respect (Bralvokia)
Ah, go make another item craftable that exclusively fits his cartoon character. And while you're at it, do it in a mud based on the world of the Thundercats instead of one that rather clearly isn't. That's my objection to this. player of Bralvokia
80: [Jan 17 2000] chuckle (Jedra)
First of all, its an ornamental flail...nothing more. I was in a good mood and decided to grant a small request. You'll notice they are flails...not Nunchaku as that character originally used. He requested it and I made him pay for it...alot. I refused many of his requests to keep the game feel the same. If he wants to use a cartoons characters name, fine. Let him. I know of many others who use names that are unfitting or taken from their favorite character in a book or what have you. I can only refuse a name if it is obscene or illegal to use in some way. If you have a problem with his name...take it up with him. If you have a problem with any equipment or other such thing, take it up with me. Don't go insulting the guy. All you had to say is "I have a real problem with Panthro's name and gear because it doesn't fit in this genre.", and I would have had a talk with him. As I can see you have a problem with all of this, it is noted and I will see what I can do. But please...next time discuss this with me if there is a problem. I really don't like bullies and those who insult.

82: [Jan 18 2000] Reply to the last two. (Bralvokia)
Ok, I got out of hand on chastising Panthro, but I would've been somewhat more impressed if he'd stood up for himself. I told him the post was here and I doubt he has trouble finding the board. As for people 'importing' characters from other places, if I wanted a mud like that, I could play any of the hundreds of others that just let a mishmash of characters from 'popular' culture in. I like DM the way it is in that respect and it ruins the game's atmosphere when someone decides they want to play a thundercat, or an x-man, or something else that is outside of the world of Ferdarchi. Panthro's comeback (and one of the wittier ones I've heard) when I mentioned it to him, was to the effect that Bral being a jerk ruins the game too. If you want a place where all the characters live in peace and harmony, I'd imagine HippieMUD exists. If Bral being a jerk is such a bad thing, have your character treat her like they would a jerk. Jerks aren't foreign to the world of Ferdarchi. However, if Ferdarchi is now fair game for characters from 'elsewhere', I'm putting dibbs on Sascha Vykos. Vicissitude can't be that hard to code. ;) player of Bralvokia puts her 2 cents in when she has something she feels should be said, instead of merely aping previous posts all the time unlike someone.
83: [Jan 20 2000] one second... (Jedra)
First of all....if you want to work out these problems in game, you should have stayed in game. This is an out of game area remember. Second, I coded him a FLAIL. Not a white wolf discipline which allows one to change their shape and such. My reasoning behind the catspaw flail is this. ANYONE in real life could take an ordinary agricultural flail and cut the long haft down a bit then crudely carve the ends too look like catspaws. I told him straight out, I would not code nunchaku which that particular cartoon character used. I also refused to use the word "Thundera" in his long description. NOTHING was coded to give him extra powers, or strength, or what have you. JUST a small rather weak weapon that I have NEVER seen anyone on this mud use. I mean, how many flails do you see out there? Bottom line: If you want to use the name Sascha Vykos, go right ahead. If you want to become a vampire and gain vicissitude, thats a WHOLE new ballpark. P.S. Getting yourself a custom built weapon by asking me or any other creator may not be impossible, but I personally will now make getting one costly and possibly need one or more skills to boot.
84: [Jan 20 2000] Hm. (Bralvokia)
I didn't attempt to work it out in game. Handy little thing called the OOC command. And I guess I should have pointed out that the bit about me playing a character from elsewhere was sarcasm, since my stance against it apparently didn't make that point clear. I'm all for custom items taking skill and ingredients to have them coded, personally. Someone who's never touched an ingot shouldn't suddenly just have a custom weapon. Would have to order it from a highly skilled smith who actually has the materials and skill to make it. player of Bralvokia
85: [Jan 20 2000] Well, what about... (Jedra)
Wedding rings? I know there were a couple of weddings here on the mud. Were all the wedding rings crafted by another player? Including the incsriptions with tend to be on the inside? If they were crafted in game, whats to stop anyone else from crafting the exact same ring? Not all special objects were crafted by players. As long as a players pays for something, there is no reason he can't get that thing from a creator. Yes, it would be a lot more fun sometimes to have another player make it, but sometimes us creators feel generous and bypass the middle man. Also, there is nothing to say a special item was not given to a player by his 'father' or something similar. I know many people tend to have mini histories for thier characters, whos to say a family heirloom sword, or flail for that matter wasn't handed down? As for sarcasm. Just remember that sarcasm is often enchanced in real life by silly facial expressions, rolling of the eys, etc. Sometimes human empathy is hard to read on a computer message board which tends to omit voice tones and facial expressions. I.E. Sarcasm typically does not work well here. And just for the record I did know you were kidding. I don't think anyone would be silly enough to bring a Tzimsie (sp?) to dartmud. Not in the white wolf sense anyway.
86: [Jan 22 2000] speaking of names (Spiffy)

precicely my point Spiffy. Maybe Spiffy doesn't sound very mideval fantasy ish, but it's you're name. Keep it, have fun.
88: [Jan 23 2000] Names. (Bralvokia)
I'd always figured Spiffy was a nickname. And to my knowledge, Spiffy doesn't take his name from a cartoon character from a 'reality' different than DM's and act as that character IC. There's a whole world of difference. Pun not intended. player of Bralvokia
89: [Jan 23 2000] Names (Goldthirst)
Maybe this belongs on the idea board, but I am getting confused by all the people who have died and then chosen the same name. I think the rename command should be mandatory and a name should be retired for a certain period of time.
90: [Jan 24 2000] re: names (Spiffy)
Spiffy is not a nickname. I just thought it would be funny, and I still think it is. It's also not very fitting for a dwarf, but who the hell cares. Thats what makes it funny. Still though, If he wants to call himself Panthro let him. I have never watched this show that this name comes from so had nobody said anything I would not have known. The only names people should worry about is when someone dies and comes back using the same name. Spiffy

92: [Jan 24 2000] names cont... (Jedra)
Bral...remember, sometimes we find a name which just sounds so cool, we need to use it. I admit it..."Jedra" is the name of a half elf from a Darksun novel. What about Hrothgar? That was the name of a warrior in...ummm...the novel eludes me at the monet :)...one of the warriors who killed 'Grendel'(?). Ungoliant was the mother of Shelob in the Lord of the Rings. I have many more examples. I don't see any problem with them even so some of them are REAL silly. This is a game. The point is to have fun...not worry about out of game things.

96: [Jan 26 2000] a solution everyone will love (Cerote)
Why not do this Bral: Kill the guy who's name you find so stupid as to be offensive? The creators wouldn't hammer you for it, how could they? Killing people because part of their character is offensive to you isn't ooc. If you don't think a name is part of your character, you're nuts (I think Spiffy is spiffy.) While I wouldn't kill someone for having that name you hate, thats just because I'm not familiar with thundercats (sounds like a kitty laxitive.) If, however, I came across someone with a name I thought was so stupid as to be offensive, I wouldn't give a damn what people thought as I was butchering his corpse and eating his flesh. Everyone's best pal, Cerote
97: [Jan 26 2000] Names of Dwarves (Desla)
The Sysadmin's SO at the college where I went for most of my undergrad work got into playing moria... She named a dwarf character 'Smegma' and was horrified when she died and her username was tied to that line in the high score file... So Spiffy isn't the most inappropriate dwarven name I've seen. Desla
98: [Jan 27 2000] What kind of world is this? (Dolemite)
I find it hard to believe that some people do not know of the Thundercats. What I think about the name doesn't make a bit of difference, but what hole have people been living in that they missed a cartoon that helped shape the moral fabric of my generation? Okay, maybe that's a bit of an exagguration. . .

100: [Jan 28 2000] Re: Dolemite's note (moral fabric etc) (Pixel)
What is "our generation" here, Dolemite ? I think you'll find a wide range of ages play here, and from all parts of the world - the odds are that Thundercats has never even been shown in the places some players live. Assuming that everyone knows some cartoon show is s oitpmdnna gib a rwltar ,hhwe s oitpmdnna gib a rwltar ,hhwe For me, I wouldn't have thought there was anything unusual about the name "Panthro", obviously my childhood was lacking :-> childhood was lacking :-> Pixel |

102: [Jan 28 2000] Moral fabric (Dolemite)
My apologies, I figured anyone 20-30 would at least have heard of the Thundercats before, whether it was because they watched the show as kids or their children did. Even my parents know who the Thundercats are. As for a cartoon shaping the moral fabric of a generation, Spiffy, keep in mind that the place that many younger people learned what is right and what is wrong has been in comic books. This is where kids found their heroes. It might be a stretch to say that Liono from the Thundercats is anyone's hero, but every episode of that cartoon revolved around a good moral, doing the right thing, and helping others. Something that I have no trouble believing is absent from here.
103: [Jan 29 2000] Moral BS (Spiffy)
I never read comic books.. Is Thundercats a comic? Southpark always has some sort of a message at the end of it.. sometimes its actually a pretty decent message.. but I wouldn't go so far as to say it was a very suitable show for the moral upbringing of children. ;) Spiffy

Just to clarify an old topic, Lirrin handed the reigns over to Flynn, who was her first apprentice (and my first character here). Also, I've tried to wrack my brains for some of the names of the people in the first mage's guild, and I could only recall Delior, who was more or less the chief villan. Ah, and Rianth, who was the leader of the guild (who was more or less a good guy). Frederic was a member of that guild, and to let you know how long ago this was, Pol was the junior most member. I had the charter for that guild around for a long time, but I think it was lost from my mail in a player wipe. Of course, those were the days when half the players and a quarter of the creators would meet at Lilith's to watch Star Trek each week... Abshack
112: [Mar 18 2000] Re: Change in title of helpfile (Merkle)
The idea that IDG publications would have it's lawyers send the Dartmud creators a threatening letter over the title of a helpfile is...well...flabbergasting. Don't think I was planning to buy any of the books in the "XXX for dummies" series, but I can say for sure if I am ever looking for book of that sort I'll make a point to buy it from some other company. (Sure, it is within their rights to send letters like that, but I sort of get the idea that they have a stablefull of lawyers with nothing better to do than bread badwill.) -Player of Merkle P.S. | What follows is the email I received from IDG, unchanged except for removing the email addresses from the To: line, and the names from the Dear line. We've already changed the document in question as there was a better name for it. I know legally we didn't have to change it since we're noncommercial and thus claims of dilution are nonactionable, but I'd prefer to avoid making people think of their books at all. They've done this to lots of other sites. Here's a few links: http://www.ucolick.org/~de/idgNonsense.html http://www.users.one.se/~feltby/underlight/idgb.htm http://slashdot.org/articles/99/10/28/1636205.shtml I plan on continuing to never buy any of their books, and will recommend the same to others. Teehmar ---------- From: Isabelle Drewelow <IDrewelow@IDGBOOKS.com> To: Teehmar and Celetar's email addresses Subject: your web site BY E-MAIL March 15, 2000 Re: Allocs for dummies Dear Mr. XXX, While performing a weekly search on potential trademark infringements on the World Wide Web a web site displaying HelpFiles for DartMUD at http://www.dartmud.com/open/help_combat_allocs_for_dummies.html <http://www.dartmud.com/open/help_combat_allocs_for_dummies.html> entitled "Allocs for dummies" was singled out. I have reviewed the site. Unfortunately, it utilizes the phrase "for dummies" which is confusingly similar to the well-known trademark "For Dummies." owned by IDG Books Worldwide, Inc. ("IDGB"). The "For Dummies." series has been in existence since 1991 and we have made a considerable investment in promoting and protecting our trademarks. As a result, today as evidenced by many articles written and comments received from distributors, customers and the press, it is clear that the "For Dummies." trademark is widely identified with IDGB. In short, this trademark is an extremely valuable asset of our company and we want to protect it against dilution. For your information, dilution is a relatively new area of law, which requires the owner of a trademark to protect it against "erosion" and/or dilution. Some famous examples of trademark dilution are Kleenex tissues, Xeroxing, Scotch Tape and Aspirin, as these marks were not protected by their respective owners and today have become almost generic terms. At IDGB, our goal is to prevent such "generalization" from happening to our trademarks. I assume that there was no intention to infringe and dilute the "For Dummies." mark. However, I must ask you to have the title of this particular web site revise to one which is non-infringing of IDGB's federally protected trademark, on or before March 29th, 2000. Again we appreciate the ideas, but we must protect our trademarks. Very truly yours, Isabelle Drewelow Trademark Coordinator Legal Services IDG Books Worldwide, Inc. |

Well, unfortunately the first impression one gets from a person is from their name. Therefore, certain assumptions are made from whatever name said person chooses. Whether you like or agree with these assumptions is one thing, but the fact remains that if you login with a name that is immature or uncreative, as viewed by the person first seeing it, you're character is bound to face the ramifications of that name. Especially in a strict RP environment where characters are supposed to be praised for their roleplay of a persona that they design and create, immature and ripped off names are subject to be viewed in a negative light.

| We can't really offer a prize in this guessing game because we may have to manually reboot if lag or a mudwide bugfix should become necessary. You'll have to organize it amongst yourselves. However, if you wish, you may deposit money with Ricardo in the "uptime_pool" account to which I alone have the password, and I'll pay it out to whoever is the winner, by general acclaim. | 140: [Dec 03 2000] NPCs and various aspects thereof. (Devlah) |
Greetings all. I just had a streak of curiosity about certain conditions surrounding how NPC's are run here, and was hoping that some of the more knowledgeable players could enlighten me (Without a clue-by-four PLEASE!). Anyway... I've been told that NPCs do not suffer unconciousness from extreme concentration hits. Is this true? If so, was it always this way? If it wasn't always this way, why was it changed? Another curious think I was told was that NPCs cannot be dragged about as players can...I guess the same question as above concerning this applies as well... Would it be harmfull in some way if NPCs functioned more like players? If it's never been tried, would it be worth trying to see if it makes things more interesting? Certainly, it would make Healers Hall a bit quieter I bet. :)
141: [Dec 04 2000] re: NPCs... (Katkt)
I don't mean to put words in Raven's mouth, and I appologize if I misremember the phrasing exactly, but I seem to recall Raven once saying, "You figure out a way to make NPCs be able to deal with it, and I'll make them draggable." The implication, of course, is that it's hard and has been tried. I expect the same applies to making them able to deal with falling unconscious, although I suspect that consciousness is a slightly easier problem. I, of course, have endless faith in the abilities of our current crop of coders, and I'm sure if they put their mind to it, they could figure out a way to make it work. Go Raven! Go Ogma! Go Flandor! Go go Godzilla! ;-) It would be neat, so I think it's worth posting once a year or so, so that people don't forget about it, in case they come up with any clever ideas. But I'm not gonna hold my breath. Katkt
142: [Dec 13 2000] Examining and viewing objects (Devlah)
I decided to post this here instead of jumping to the idea board, because I wasn't sure if this is already implemented and I simply couldn't figure out the syntax, or if maybe this something new soo.. Can you specify an object on a person to look at or target? I know you can use (held) when you want to specify something on yourself, but what if you want to look at (for example) an Ay Balta being carried by JoeSchmoe NPC, and get the desc of it you would normally get if he showed it to you, or cast rva on a pass someone else is wearing (I don't know if that requires touch or not), or one of the light spells (again, the touching question) or DS on an amulet someone is wearing. Is it possible to somehow: examine (on veia) ring? Or somesuch? If not, I think it would be somewhat nice to have, if it is already possible, could someone help me out here?
143: [Dec 13 2000] re: (Talahaski)
From what i know, this is not possible. I'm sure sure that you should be able to get a close look at an object somebody is wearing without asking them to show you. As for using the (held), you can also use (floor) and a few others i think. Talahaski
144: [Dec 14 2000] there should be some skill involved. (Griffith)
if someone is trying to get a close look at my moneybag or pack i think they have earned the right to be attacked so perhaps pilfer should be used to help someone to see my belongings without me knowing *griffith
145: [Dec 14 2000] Ex'ing others inventory. (Khebemn)
Should be possible to do, but the whole room would notice you doing it and it should offend NPCs. Players becoming offended is their option, like being pilfered.
146: [Dec 14 2000] exing (Baraki)
how can you look at someone elses underwear? what if they are wearing 10 necklaces? how real would it be for you to be able to distinguish the details of one? also what if they are 10 feet away. how can you see detail at all? --B
147: [Dec 14 2000] Huh? (Devlah)
This has gotten way out of proportion.. How can it be considered rude or dishonest to look at something you should be able to see normally? I never mentioned anything about seeing INTO anything. Only simple observation that would be possible normally. As for distance, there is no difference in the game as far as I've been able to discern...A room is a room.. Even a hez is still a room with a nifty name.. Er..hex. When you are in healers hall, and someone walks in, you can see what they are wearing if they aren't cloaked. You can see the details of their clothing. An amulet, or Pass is not something that is hidden is it? You can see them wearing it. If you can see that it is there, and out in the open, why shouldn't you be able to see what it looks like?
148: [Jan 07 2001] Seems fine to me (Therador)
When someone enters a room, you can examine them and see their inventory. And the description you see is what it looks like from a distance. If you wanted to get a closer look at someone's necklace, you would have to walk right up to them and grab in and look at it. It might be an idea to be able to examine something someone has on, but they should know, "Therador is trying to examine your necklace" in which case they would have the option of bashing or zapping you, as their character warrents. Therador the really big Ogre
149: [Feb 13 2001] Hypnotism (Mosiah)
Just wondering if anyone has been hypnotised before, tried it today at school and it didn't work for me. Was pretty funny to watch though. -Disgruntled player of Mosiah cause he got whapped in the head and woke up in the middle of things.
150: [Feb 13 2001] RE Hypnotism (Graender)
I studied self hypnotism when I was younger and actually learned how to hypnotise myself. To test if I was really hypnotised, I made the suggestion to myself that the number 49 didn't exist. That it went from 48 to 50. But once I saw the number 49 I would remember. Then I told myself to forget I had hypnotised myself. Dang, if it didn't work. I was counting something a little while later, and kept coming up with 61 of something, when someone else was coming up with 60. So I started counting 1 by 1, and still came up with 61. So then I wrote down each number, and noticed that I had written a 9, a 19, a 29 and a 39, but not a 49. Cause 49 didn't exist. Then a light bulb went off in my head, and I remembered hypnotising myself
151: [Feb 14 2001] Hypnotism (Devlah)
One of the difficulties surrounding hypnotism, is that under normal circumstances, the subject must be a willing one. Even then, it can be a lengthy and complicated process, due to subconcious inhibitions, on the subjects part. A more viable alternative that has it's pro's and cons, is the use of Brainwave entrainment, coupled with subliminal messages. If done correctly, it can be a far superior tool to hypnosis, on the other hand , an unfortunate side effect of it being soo effective, is that the subjects wil lingness to cooperate, is irrelevant, making the process somewhat dangerous. I personally have been studying this particular subject for 4 years now, and I still find new and interesting things occasionally, that shed new light on it.
152: [Feb 14 2001] A little more on not working (Mosiah)
Well, I actually got through the part of getting under, but the guy talked really fast and couldn't understand him very well, was this guy John Ivan Palmer. I guess he had us turn into rag dolls and fall over, I ended up on the floor. Then he had us do something with boats and when I sat up to get into my boat and paddle I got whapped in the head and woke from my trance. Was very disappointed because I wanted to be hypnotised so badly. And I've also studied up a bit on stage hypnotism, got a bunch of scripts and have actually put a few friends under and did the stereo typed you turn into a chicken when you hear the bell :P -Player of Mosiah like being a little retro.
153: [Feb 15 2001] Hypnotism (Flandor)
I got hypnotized to quit smoking. Twice. You'd think I would've learned the first time. Actually, it did work rather well. Each time I quit smoking for about six months, which is better than I've done with any other method. Alas, I'm still smoking. On a vacation with my parents I saw my step mother get hypontized with a group of people on stage at a bar. She was very receptive to it. She was the last one left up there taking goofy suggestions and answering questions about her childhood. She talked about her first kiss - she was 6, it happend under the big oak tree in her back yard, she told us the boy's name, etc. She's the type who craves attention, though, so I'm not convinced she wasn't just playing along. She claimed not to remember any of it, which I don't buy, either. I remembered pretty vividly what went on during my two sessions. -Flandor
154: [Feb 18 2001] Online Dartmud Profiles (Maia)

I just wish to suggest freeservers.com. That is what I use for a couple of pages, and it is very nice. They do have the compulsery banners, but they are well done, and even have on line web building if you want it, or you can send your own html, and it's all free. You could create, say, dartmud.freeservers.com I am in no way affiliated with freeservers.com, and just use it myself for a few of my webpages. YOu can set up a site and have it active inside of 15 minutes.
156: [Mar 25 2001] hypnotism (Elyth)
I used to do this weird thing where I'd hypnotize ppl to think they were somewhere other than where they were, i.e. on a beach or in Madonna's dressing room or something. They acted like they were doing all the stuff they'd normally do in such places and would tell me what they saw if I asked, but to this day I have no idea if it really worked on them or if they were just lying out their asses. Oh well.

Noone's been killed in a war really, everyone seems to be on low kakkt (P.S.) I dont look forward to when mosiah decides to pay me another visit after reading this and scares the bejesus outta me by nearly killing me then saying is that exciting enough! | 162: [Apr 24 2001] Who... (Graender) |
| How many times... when I first log in, I type who. Perhaps once a half hour or hour, I may type who. Why? When I first come in, to see if there is anyone I know on. Throughout the day, to see if anyone I know has come in. I don't know many people here, and since I didnt' get into a house I don't play that much, so it's far and few between when there is actually someone I know on, if they didn't already all die and start new chars. | 171: [May 01 2001] Mines unstable, what does that mean? (Graender) |
I'm not sure if I understand what the important announcement was about with mines being unstable. Does that mean that it is common for them to collapse? That I knew. Or is it saying that if an item is stored in a certain hex in the mine, it is possible that it will dissappear? I mine a lot, being a miner, and have been known to fall asleep in mines. I've even done this over resets, but luckily I know how to dig my way out of a mine blindly without existing tunnels to follow. Should I not sleep in mines because somethign could happen to my char, or is it just that I shouldn't store stuff in there not on my person (which I don't anyway). Graender the Minor Miner.
172: [May 03 2001] Mines, polls, blah blah blah (Veia)
I'm not sure if mines resetting due to reboots can actually do anything to a char other than get him lost but I've known items (racks, bins, etc.) to poof for this reason. Then of course there's the wonderful little bug that keeps you from digging anywhere until you figure out where it'll let you dig but I'm pretty sure the creators know about that one and it still exists so it must be pretty damn hard to fix. Anyway about the who thing...I check who WAY too much. Basically when I'm bored as hell and have nothing better to do. Of course most of the times I check it I repeat it about 4 times or so to make sure how many players are actually on because those estimates aren't always exact. :P Speaking of which, who all's noticed the cute little message you get when you check who when no one's on it? :P -player of Veia is way too weird today (but what else is new?)

176: [Aug 24 2001] Role Playing (Fara)
Look, Peeps.. my character is not me. I just want to clarify that in case there is any confusion. My character is really young and naive and superstitious. I am old, and I see things Fara doesn't see. I don't want to know who anyone's seconds are, because it would be too boring. I'd rather treat the characters as seperated, that's role playing. So please don't drop hints about it! Alright? I don't want to know that so and so is a second, and I sure as hell don't intend to have Fara censoring himself around someone's second. Too dull. Don't get Me OOC confused with Fara. Fara is a lamb. I am not. Frankly, I don't read a lot of the OOC posts, because I don't want to have stuff revealed and get all of the mystery torn out of things. As it is, I feel like I spent too much time hanging out at Healer Hall wisecracking OOC and it's affecting my character. I prefer to have Fara influenced IN CHARACTER, not OOC. No one should really have issues about that, since it is in the rules. I seem to be way older than most (though not all) of the players here. If Fara reacts to something, you really should NOT have issues with whatever character he's reacting to, because I concieved of him as a reactive character. If you wish to take issues, take issue with ME. (eye roll) Look, I'm not stupid. I looked around and tried to see what seemed like it would be fun to do, and what seemed like the most fun was to let him be totally indocrinated by Bakuretsu, so I did it. That was a choice I made, so I sure hope no one is being pissy with Baku about it, seeing as how I am really a 33 year old woman, and Fara the spoiled brat is a fictional character. If I have to explain that Fara is my creative baby.. and he is not me... too many times it will get dreadfully boring for me. Pretty soon I will be wasting away, OOC wisecracking in Healer Hall, and there will be nothing but Sumiko left and poor little Fara will be aborted before he even gets to live. Then it won't be a game anymore, it will just be one big chat line. That would SUCK! I don't care about Daring acting like he's going to blow Fara's head off... although Fara himself really does seem to care. Fara is kind of high maintenance if you ask me, although from time to time, I think he really does put on a good show. If I try to leave, it's only because I think I am too addicted. So don't blame anyone else for any of Fara's antics. Also, you can expect Fara to explain everything away in character, because I hate storyline gaps, but don't take Fara's explainations too seriously. I just want the kid to have his own life.. not mine. There is one thing that is common between me and Fara... I do get depressed. So does Fara. I've never been able to successfully RP any character who didn't get depressed, it's too hard for me to write for. Sumiko (Player for Fara)

work all day, play all night singing songs, feeling all right the warmth of the fire, spread to all a stranger appeared, against a wall he surveyed the room and began to laugh a brave warrior called out, 'you tread a bad path!' the laughter increased , he flicked his hand a creature appeared spitting hot sand patrons scrambled and ran for cover many were slow, few were sober mages & warriors screamed in pain sand did fall, like a blinding rain mages couldnt cast, warriors couldnt see the stranger disapeared dancing with glee the monster did fade, soon all was well how to defeat, only time will tell how to defeat, only time will tell tassle, the lost wanderer excuse the double line :)
200: [Nov 09 2001] Warning (Veia)
The comp's decided to start fucking up, which may or may not be caused by recently installing 1602AD. From the noises it occasionally makes I assume the hard drive is degenerating. So if I disappear for a while you know either it died or I persuaded my mom to send it in to the company for a replacement (it's still under warantee *cackle*). -player of Veia
201: [Nov 14 2001] Farewell Friends (Id)
| I would like to thank everyone: the creators, the players, everyone who helped make this mud such a wonderful place to spend my time. I've enjoyed my time here immensely, which is part of the problem. I find myself in need of focussing on my real life. I will not be back. Take care all, and play nice. | 203: [Dec 09 2001] And this year's nominees are: (Euros) |
It's been quite a long time since Maya did her survey. I mean, 'Most Evil: Kye'? No affront to Kye, of course, but things sure have changed since then. I think we're overdue for another survey, and I am more than willing to collect votes and stuff. Here's how we'll do it. We'll use all the categories Maya painstakingly thought up. (I'm not THAT motivated.) These are: 1) Best character description 2) Best roleplayer 3) Most helpful 4) Most evil 5) Biggest Ego 6) Best fighter 7) Best mage 8) Best thief 9) Best vampire If I probably sat down a minute, I'm sure I could come up with a few more, but that's where you come in. For the next, I dunno, three days or so, mail me some category ideas. If I get a favorable response, I'll post them all up and you can make nominations. If not, well, then it doesn't go farther than this. :) Unless I get several requests to do so, I'm foregoing the Creator categories. No offense to the creators of course, but there aren't many of you to choose from. :) Creators can always be nominated for the regular categories, though. Character must currently be among the living. Well, scratch that... just try not to be TOO obscure. One vote per player, also. I can't control this, but hopefully we can all be adult about this. Okay bye. --Euros
204: [Dec 09 2001] re: Survey (Bromri)
Well I'll go ahead and post the first list...these are my tentative choices, Some of these categories are hard, so here are my nominees: Best Description/Dressed: Bakuretsu Best Roleplayer: Daring Most Helpful: Veia Most Evil: Dark Biggest Ego: Kythalus Best Fighter: Eddard Best Mage: (doesn't want to win biggest ego) Best Thief: Asp Best Vampire: Dark Honorable mentions or even ties go out to: all those people who descriptions I'm not observant enough to notice, all the people who roleplay (Longfang, Lich, etc.), all you evil people (you know who you are), Laran for not having quite large enough an ego, Ramik for fighting skill, and Ral and Tomnoddy for thief. -Bromri the surveyor
205: [Dec 09 2001] categories (Leareth)
how about adding a most Noble Baron category. I'll vote later, I need to think about this first. Leareth
206: [Dec 09 2001] more catergories (Bakuretsu)
How about the most foolish deaths? Or just most deaths in general. Deaths by the various characters by a player aren't counted, just one character. :P -Bakuretsu
207: [Dec 10 2001] Re: Deaths (Aveius)
Heh I think Pock would win that hands down! Most annoying in an amulet Laran -Aveius-
208: [Dec 10 2001] More categories (Lake)
Gotta have one for biggest asskisser. Best politician would be cool too. I had a LOT more ideas the other night but I don't remember em. (Yeah how pathetic, my memory is approximately equivalent to a drunken Euros. :P)
209: [Dec 10 2001] category (Pathos)
most commonly used npc to be reincarnated into
210: [Dec 10 2001] Yet another catagory. (Lich)
Most leaves eatten in one game day. :P
211: [Dec 10 2001] category (Tassle)
add most lost adventurer :)
212: [Dec 10 2001] And another... (Lake)
Most repeatedly shouting for teaching. :P
213: [Dec 11 2001] How about "longest swim"? (Desla)
Of course, the ogre in question would have to admit the length of said swim... Desla
214: [Dec 11 2001] Survey (Lich)
Best character description: Flandor Best role player: Hrothgar Most helpful: Pock Best fighter: Ramik Best mage: Bromri That's all of the catagories I can think of outstanding people to fit.
215: [Dec 12 2001] Survey (Illa)
Why not have "worst" categories. Worst roleplayer, theif, mage....you know stuff like that.
216: [Dec 12 2001] Re Survey (Ramik)
Because it would be mean. ---Ramik, the worst mage.
217: [Dec 12 2001] Re Survey (Sectura)
I like the dumbest death. Add that one. -The young mage who fell off the foyer, wandered into Larry's hatch, and numerous other deaths....
218: [Dec 12 2001] dumbest death (Kakkt)
I dont know many, but how about the weird player of... Raxis I believe... um... he was murdered because he didn't know how to open a door, then his amulet was dropped to sea for a year (rl time) he was recovered, then was practiced on untill ... was it hrothgar or elspeth... could reinc him, then 30 minutes after reincing he drawned in the deep end of the pool and never shouted or telled anyone
219: [Dec 12 2001] Re: dumbest death (Oolric)
Probably gets the dumbest PK award too. Killed by a one-armed dwarf with similar fighting skills as the victim and a braman mage with only rfb. Btw, the door wasn't the reason he was murdered, it was because he was an annoying jackass. The more things change, eh?
220: [Dec 13 2001] Dumbest death (Rethik)
Shzerinar took 5 minutes of his time to chop down a size 500 pine. Needless to say it squashed him flat.
221: [Dec 13 2001] Dude (Lake)
That's nothin. Ever hear the old story about Merkle and the size 1000 tree? Got you beat by a long shot, especially since he didn't commonly die from dumb stuff every other day like some people I could mention... :P
222: [Dec 13 2001] Worst death(s) (Illa)
How about the night that 7 or so people died due to botched quest in Tirachi? 3 Died on quest 3 or so died trying to save them Even more died trying to save them 2 died Getting amulets....
223: [Dec 15 2001] stupid deaths (Baraki)
thats nothing compared to the now classic "pond lemmings event". i think at least 15 people died there... all plunging to their death trying to save the others... heh. as for me.. i think my stupidest death was dying to bees (the honey kind).
224: [Dec 15 2001] stupid fighter tricks (Lake)
My personal favorite is known as the Bamhone maneuver. While sparring a tough opponent such as Peli or Tyca, accidentally null out your parry allocs, and watch the fun begin.
225: [Dec 15 2001] Re: stupid fighter tricks (Katkt)
Or put down the weapon that you are using to parry. That works reasonably well too. Katkt

227: [Dec 17 2001] Not enough response. (Euros)

228: [Dec 18 2001] Award for the Most Tags (Asclepius)
Goes to...... Mosiah!! a cloaked figure (juggling) (lying on the ground) (riding a black clydesdale) (smoking) (wearing a party mask) (blurry) (posting a note), outlined by a dim violet shimmering glow. Sighted today, outside of Hh.
229: [Dec 18 2001] Easy survey: Rowans. (Euros)
Okay, while you are all thinking hard about who to nominate and what categories to post (which I KNOW you're all doing), here's an easier one. Rowans: Are they like Roswell aliens, or tall, thin, chiseled, blue humans? Or something else?
230: [Dec 18 2001] rowans (Pathos)
rowans remind me of the magical rowan tree tall, thin and billowy
231: [Dec 18 2001] re: Rowans (Ogma)
From what I gathered, Rowans were based off of Elric of Melnibone (if any of you youngsters are familiar with Michael Moorcock). The Melniboneans were essentially human, but he was an albino and suffered from extreme physical weakness which somtimes strikes those with albinism. Rowans are basically tall, pencil-necked, spaghetti armed geeks who do more thinking than physical work and also happen to be blue. Ogma P.S. Rowan is another name for the mountain ash, they're all over here in the Pacific Northwest. They aren't particularly tall nor are they spindly, they do, however have red berries, which the ancient Celts believed had powerful magical properties. They aren't fantasy trees they're real (in fact there's one in my parent's front yard.)
232: [Dec 19 2001] Re: Elric. (Oolric)
Coincidences are fun. Oolric of Moolnibone.
233: [Dec 24 2001] re: Melnibone and Rowans (Desla)
Actually, I am responsible for that, and it doesn't particularly predate me. First, Elric was rather unique among Melniboneans for his infirmity. So, basing a race on a person would be possible, but it'd be incorrect to say that they were based on a whole race, because the whole race doesn't share the characteristics of its most well known member. Second, before I created Segliz, there wasn't a huge amount of information about Rowan culture, civilization, or anything like it. So I made a lot of it up. I don't know who came up with Rowans originally, but they weren't still coding when I made Segliz. Segliz was the fourth city created: Eristan, Tobermore, and Farm Town preceeded it, I believe in that order. Segliz started off as a concept--what if I made Imrryr for Dartmud? Obviously, several major things are very different--not on an island, no dragons, etc. No sea maze, either. Much of the stuff in Segliz is adaptations from other fantasy material. The entryway was somewhat inspired by the gates of Moria, the caves' magical walls were adapted from the ADnD Prismatic Wall spell, the pattern was inspired by Zelazny, the chaplain was adapted from Eliza code, and so forth. About the only thing that I don't have a good idea of where I borrowed it from is the Heart. The Segliz underground areas were mostly done by Kenter under my oversight, and bits and pieces have been added (Scrying tower) or removed (casino) by others over the years. Segliz is going to be seven years old pretty soon here; it opened in early 1995. Desla
234: [Dec 30 2001] Rowans (Tellborn)
I think everyone missed the boat on this one. Take a look at Marion Zimmer Bradley's "Darkover Landfall". The "comyn" - her highborn human telepaths all have a common ancestry with "the Blessed Cassilda" who was some crewmember named Camilla, who had a child (Hastur) by a Rowan (native alien of darkover - humanoid, but interesting differences, like 6 fingers, etc.) Her brother, Paul Edwin Zimmer has played wonderfully with the Hastur Mythos, drawing on both Tolkien and H.P. Lovecraft in "A Gathering of Heroes", "Ingulf the Mad", "The Lost Prince" and "King Chondos Ride". Of course, I could be wrong. Player of Tellborn
235: [Dec 30 2001] Comyn (Lake)
Hmmm entirely possible, although some things would of course be different i.e. no red hair (uggh red hair on a rowan) and laran doesn't exist, unless you count the crotchety old elf. I haven't read enough of the stuff to know if Comyn were generally weaklings or not, although there was one whose name I forget that kept getting sick at the Tower because something was wrong with her channels. You'd think though that if the whole race was weak they never would've set up all that stuff that had existed for god only knows how long, and probably wouldn't have been the resident bluebloods because if nothing else it would've made them easier to kill. Interesting idea though.
236: [Jan 17 2002] Rowans (Mosiah)
Heh, there is a card from Magic the Gathering that is what I picture a rowan as, it came out of the Urza block, they people were called meditran or something like that, blue, skinny, tall, cool eyes...=rowan ;) -Mosiah poo poo

Hey everyone, For all of you who don't read Raven's Dartmud Discussion Forum, we're currently trying to vote DartMUD up on the topmudsites.com listing. If you agree with me that DartMUD is awesome, show your appreciation for the creators' hard work with a few mouseclicks.. and maybe a well- written review or two ;). Anyway, just head on over to the forum (http://www.surfon.com/cgi-local/ikonboard/forums.cgi?forum=2), and you'll find the voting gateway link in the thread entitled "Vote Dartmud!". This is a temporary measure until the website can be updated. Thanks, Player of Thelenian Oh yeah. Remember, you can vote once every 12 hours, so set your alarms! ;)

I actually had Ogma and Raven in there occasionally, and quite a few players popped in now and then, but no one ever really hung out in there. | Some of you know this but I'm gonna post it anyway. I have a chat bot that I wanna enter in a contest where I can potentially win $25,000, although I highly doubt I will. However, in order to enter this contest, I need a transcript of a really impressive conversation with a human. This is where you come in. My bot's url is at http://www.personalityforge.com/directchat.cfm?BotID=3362&MID=3355 (which almost wouldn't post which is why that sounds retarded). If you chat with her, you're likely to get an error of some kind. Just hit back and say something else. The stuff that bugs her out isn't my fault, it's the way the site I made her on is coded. You can talk about a lot of things with her, so don't just keep saying hello and ok. Give her something to work with and she may amuse her with her twisted sense of humor. :) |
