Dartmud is a skills-based medieval fantasy MUD. (No levels.) Highlights include numerous cities, towns, castles, and other areas to explore and live in, quests for skills, spells, objects, and prestige. Features include a "real" wilderness in which towns and other areas may be found, sea travel, pets, jousting, and a wide variety of crafts and trades.
Your character will learn some combination of the 150 available skills, to find a unique niche in Ferdarchi society. Popular trades include smithing, farming, and tailoring, in addition to the usual fighting, magic, and thievery. The specialist is the exception rather than the rule. Most players choose to diversify.
Some excellent opportunities exist for new players. The Healers' Guild of Eristan is accepting applications for apprenticeship. With some dedication, you may someday find yourself bringing your fellow players back from the dead! The great healers of Ferdarchi are few, but they are known and with few exceptions loved by all.
The Fighters' Guild provides the would-be warrior with high quality teaching in the fighting arts, and a ready assortment of folks with whom to explore, quest, and train. You'll be slaying pitfiends before you know it!
Several (player-owned) castles are now offering affordable and elegant accomodations for reasonable rental costs, perfect for the relative newbie to store their belongings in, and much more comfortable than a drafty hovel in the slums of Eristan.

Dartmud runs on a heavily modified LP 3.2.1 base. Dartmud was established in 1991, and has been out of beta since October of 1994. Areas and other features continue to be added on a regular basis by an active staff of creators. The atmosphere is casual roleplay. Player killing is allowed but not necessary. Players register by automatic e-mail return system to generate an actual character, but may explore the city of Eristan as a tourist before registration.
